DKC Debaters Sound Off at Southeast 1/23/2009

Southeast @ Manual hosted DKC’s first weeknight policy debate tournament of 2009. Nine schools competed in student congress and policy debate at a tournament that was to be held in December, but moved dates due to snow.

“I love hosting this debate tournament,” said Chris Maag, head coach of Southeast debate. “I used to think that I would only do debate for a couple years now it’s in my blood,” Mr. Maag continued.

Debate is also in the blood of Reggie Roby and Taylor Dias of Central High School as they continued their winning ways by taking the first place team award in the varsity division. However, the two were bested in the category of individual speaker awards when teammate Sydnie Brown edged out both Dias and Roby to take first place.

“It was great to take first place in the team awards and have the top three speakers at this tournament,” said Jane Rinehart, head coach of the Central debate team.

Central was not the only squad to have a tremendous day. University Academy came to debate, taking home six speaker awards, top honor in the novice division and the over all sweepstakes award.

“I have been watching the University Academy squad all year they have really been working hard. They are going to be a force to reckon with for years to come. They have a lot of young talent,” said Isaac Allen, Program Coordinator for DKC.

In student congress Jay Walters continued his domination of the league by taking first place. Mr. Walters better keep an eye on the future, however, because Lincoln Prep Middle school students are gunning for his top spot. For the first time at a regular DKC tournament, middle school students were allowed to compete with high school students in student congress. Lincoln Middle impressed every one by winning four of the top ten awards.

“I just knew that my students could be competitive here, they really are very bright. I’m just so proud of them,” said Lincoln Middle School head coach Nancy Buckley.
